Long Time, No Blog

There are so many things I want to say, and I don't hesitate to do so, but lately I'm shocked at how easy I am finding to do it in short outbursts.

In a click I can tweet the article I'm reading, comment on it,  and share it with my followers in 140 characters or less.

In a few seconds I can tell all my friends and family how I'm feeling by posting a new status on Facebook.

But blogging is a bit different.

In order to do it right you need to sit and think...and type. I thought I had forgotten how to hold a pen but some days I think I've even forgotten how to sit at a real keyboard (and write in full sentences.)

I need to re-learn that skill.

I have lots to say!

Loyalty and Rewards

Thought I don't travel as much as I used to, I still enjoy the benefits of hotel and airlines loyalty programs when I can.  And by staying at one hotel brand and flying one airline as often as possible the payback can be nice.

I recently checked into one of my favorite hotels, where my "gold" benefits offer me a club lounge amongst other treats, and they informed me that if I'm in town on the 22nd, when I wake up the next morning I'll be at a totally different hotel!  (And for a brand where I don't have an elite status.)

So the question is do I continue staying at a favorite property once the benefits are gone?  

Is it really my favorite property once I'm no longer special? 

I need to think about that!

If we couldn't laugh we just would go insane...

Like many people, I'll hear a song on the radio or think of a song title and then it gets stuck in my head.

Many of the songs are really good and inspiring...others are frivolous and make me smile (and probably inspire me too)...some just drive me insane!

Drama in a Web 2.0 World

I take pride in keeping the Drama-level in my life at low but recent events have taken my Drama-level to new heights.   I'm really okay with - and am even enjoying the excitement of - some of the Drama but a Web 2.0 World has totally changed how Drama occurs.  

This past year I joined the Board of Directors of an association.  We have a big event coming up in June and, as always when deadlines approach, pressures are mounting.

In person meetings are manageable...unless there is someone on the other end of a speakerphone.

Chats are tolerable...but conversations and threads overlap...and there is always a record of what was "said."  (Have you ever read a chat transcript after the fact? OUCH!)

Email strings go on forever...and cc lists are long (and not always edited correctly!)  And who is being bcc'd???

Thankfully, I don't think FaceBook and Twitter have picked up on our Drama yet which is good. I hope we can keep it a little private.

I'm happy to say that our June event will be magnificent (though there may be a few dead bodies along the way) and lots of lessons will be learned.  For me, I'm learning how to manage Drama in a Web 2.0 World.

Tweet-Free Zone

This past year it seems that no matter where I go (business or personal), someone is tweeting about what's going on!

Last week I had the pleasure of attending America East, a long standing regional conference and trade show for newspapers and their suppliers.

I spent time on the exhibit hall floor, in sessions, and at a vendor cocktail party.  I also hung out at the Hershey Lodge with the exhibitors and attendees.

At the conference I was on a panel at a session entitled "What Recession? Best Practices in Building Classified Revenues in Recruitment and Real Estate" which focused on both print and online classified revenue generation. 

And while there were people checking their emails from time-to-time it was pretty clear that almost no one was tweeting.  This was most evident during my session as people were (*gasp*) holding pens and writing notes!  As part of the panel I too had a note pad and pen in front of me...and I found it refreshing to be taking notes for myself and not trying to be the first to tweet about what others were saying.

While I don't see myself giving up my twitter account in the near future, I do see myself bringing a notebook and pen to future conferences. (I might even start practicing doodling again!)

Sharing everything with everyone

Today I read an interesting post entitled  "Should you cross-post updates to Facebook and Twitter?"  and, once again, it made me think about what I post where.


I usually keep my Facebook updates only on Facebook. They tend to be more friend and family oriented, and lately I seem to be fixated on coffee and weather. (It has been cold and snowy here in the NYC area this winter!) 


My Tweets tend to stay on Twitter (with a handful of crossovers to LinkedIn) but my Facebook notes are quite often based on something I've Tweeted. 


Though I use other social networking tools I tend to focus on Facebook and Twitter. For now, they satisfy both my business and personal needs -- and I hope I'm not sharing everything with everyone!

I have a plan!

In theory, I try to never do anything without a plan and a goal. 

Some days, though, I just have a plan. 

Other days I just have a goal.

It has been said that a goal without a plan is just a wish.

I wonder what plan without a goal is? 

Stop the buzz?

I'm already FBing, Linking, Xinging, Tweeting, Yelping, 4Squaring, and more.

My poor SecondLife has probably used up all it's nine lives by now. (I should check on her one of these days.)

And now I Buzz...

Is it enough yet?
